Organic Cotton Mat
This organic cotton mat is extremely easy to transport. Furthermore, washable and non-slip. Also 100% recyclable from sustainable, organically grown cotton. This is GOTS certified. At the same time, it is extremely decorative and somewhat softer. This makes it particularly suitable for use on firm or cold surfaces, for example stone floors. Therefore, we recommend it especially for Hatha, Yin Yoga, Pilates or Yoga Nidra.
Our producer has the globally recognised “GOTS” seal of quality. This stands for organic textiles that have been grown sustainably. Moreover, they are also processed and shipped in a sustainable way. Furthermore, fair working conditions are guaranteed. By the way, our organic cotton mat is available in the colours brown and blue.
Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS):
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is considered the world’s leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibres. In concrete terms, this means that the high environmental criteria along the entire supply chain of organic textiles and their compliance with social criteria are defined and verified. Moreover, organic cotton is grown without harmful chemicals. Thus, the soil, air and water are free of harmful contaminants.
Difference conventional cotton:
In addition, one of the significant differences is that organic cotton produces about 46% less CO2e compared to conventional cotton. It also uses much less water for cultivation. As organic cotton producers usually use the rain much more than artificial irrigation. Our Organic Cotton Mat is from a GOTS certified producer and has been transported and packaged as organically as possible.
Is Oeko-Tex better than organic?
Although they may look similar in form, they are very different. Both in substance and in the content and processing they are very different. In this respect, Oeko-Tex is better than nothing for conventional cotton products. Nevertheless, it can never be compared with GOTS-certified organic textiles.
Organic Content Standard vs. Global Organic Textile Standard – Which organic certification should I look for?
There are two different certifications for organic cotton which we want to take a closer look at. On the one hand the Organic Content Standard and on the other hand the Global Organic Textile Standard.
Organic Content Standard:
The Organic Content Standard ensures that from the raw material to the finished product it complies with the organic standards. Thus, for OCS certified fabrics, the entire supply chain – including the farm where they were grown – must be certified as organic.
Global Organic Textile Standard:
However, on closer inspection, the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is more thorough. This is because it also covers every step in the supply chain. In fact, it is the most comprehensive accreditation covering fibre production, processing and manufacturing. Besides product labelling, it also includes various environmental factors. Furthermore, a whole range of social criteria of the International Labour Organisation.
Certification criteria of working conditions for GOTS for our organic cotton mat, these include ensuring:
Employment is freely chosen (no forced labour). Working conditions are safe and hygienic. Child labour must not be used. The level of wage payment ensures livelihoods. Working hours are not excessively long. No discrimination is practised. Harsh or inhumane treatment is prohibited.
So what is the difference between Oeko-Tex and organic cotton?
In short, Oeko-Tex certification focuses on the end product. In contrast, organic certification safeguards the entire journey from the raw fibre to the final product. Oeko-Tex certified fabric no longer contains harmful chemical residues, but this does not mean that some were not used along the way. In contrast, however, organic cotton fabric does not contain any harmful chemicals. Because none were used in any of the production processes.
